Where There’s a Will by Emily Chappell
The author is well-known and successful in the world of endurance cycling – people who cycle 200 or more kilometres a day, day after day, across continents, grabbing a few hours sleep here and there, eating what and when they can, for nothing more than the possibility of posting a better time than anyone else, or just the satisfaction of finishing.
The book is not really about Emily Chappell riding and winning events. It is about how someone overcomes the psychological and physical challenges of endurance beyond reason; how to summon the will to keep going when every muscle and nerve is shouting at you to stop.
It is also about bereavement and personal loss.
The book resonated strongly with me and I would like to write a proper appreciation of it. I hope I can do that sometime, but I shall have to read it again before I do and I have to wait for the right time.
