The Ghost by Robert Harris
A conspiracy theorists’s delight! An unpopular ex-Prime Minister who took the UK into a war in the Middle East, now staying in the USA earning big money from lectures and personal appearances, employs a ghost writer to produce his autobiography. The ghost writer falls off a ferry and drowns, and a new ghost is recruited to finish the job. A sacked ex-cabinet colleague of the ex-Prime Minister instigates a war crimes prosecution against him. Mysterious academics and shadowy organisations emerge, and the ghost writer finds out more than he bargained for. Oh, and the ex-PM has a powerful and highly intelligent wife. All this, of course, is purely fiction and any resemblance to actual persons etc etc.
No spoilers, so enough said. It’s a good read, and whether you finish the book thinking it’s a load of nonsense or that there might just be something in it will probably depend on your own political predilections.
Oh, did I mention that the author has been a political journalist and was a personal friend of Tony Blair but fell out with him after the invasion of Iraq?
