Oxford Canal Walk – Leg 1

tonyturton.com Posted on 26 April 2016 by Tony24 February 2022

21 April 2016 The Oxford Canal runs from Oxford to Hawkesbury on the northern edge of Coventry. It starts in Oxford City centre next to the King’s Mill Stream. The first leg of my walk along its length covered 21km … Continue reading →

Woodstock 23 mile walk

tonyturton.com Posted on 11 April 2016 by Tony24 February 2022

Since I bought a new smartphone a couple of months ago I’ve been struggling to get the Viewranger app to record a track. After checking with @viewranger on twitter and some tweaking of the settings the problem seems to be … Continue reading →

The training begins

tonyturton.com Posted on 7 March 2016 by Tony7 October 2024

It’s just over 6 weeks since I last got the bike out for a ride so I’m starting from base zero. I’m using my old road bike fitted with 25mm tyres and mudguards as a winter traiing bike. I rode … Continue reading →

Signed up for a Sportive

tonyturton.com Posted on 4 March 2016 by Tony30 April 2018

Oh dear. I’ve signed up to ride the BikeOxford sportive on 11 September. The 80 mile route. I can’t remember the last time I rode that far in one day, but it was a VERY long time ago. The closest I’ve come in recent times was 100km (62.5 miles) back in August 2014, which was the target I’d set myself to earn a new bike. I duly bought my carbon fibre frame Colnago that Autumn and have been riding it since then. It’s got red handlebar tape now, by the way.

Colnago

I’ve hardly ridden at all over the winter so my training will be starting from a very low level. I should be able to get up to riding 40 miles comfortably without too much trouble, and I’ll work up from there. I’ll report here on progress from time to time. Wish me luck!

Along the Med on a Bike Called Reggie by Andrew P Sykes

tonyturton.com Posted on 22 January 2016 by Tony21 June 2017

This review puts me in a dilemma. How honest should I be? Let me explain. I first came across Andrew P Sykes in the summer of 2015 while he was blogging his bike ride from Tarifa, at the southern tip … Continue reading →

Walking the Amazon by Ed Stafford

tonyturton.com Posted on 20 January 2016 by Tony20 January 2016

“A wonderful, gritty expedition book”, writes Chris Bonington on the cover of Andrew Greig’s “Summit Fever”. Much as I like that book I don’t agree with Sir Chris’s use of ‘gritty’ to describe it. But “Walking the Amazon” is a wonderful, gritty … Continue reading →

When the Professor Got Stuck in the Snow by Dan Rhodes

tonyturton.com Posted on 15 January 2016 by Tony15 January 2016

A short novel lampooning Richard Dawkins. Some good jokes, and a surprise ending. Good fun, unless you’re Richard Dawkins.

Europe at Midnight by Dave Hutchinson

tonyturton.com Posted on 19 December 2015 by Tony20 December 2015

This is the follow-up to “Europe in Autumn“. Unimaginatively, I’d expected it to pick up where ‘Autumn’ left off, but in ‘Midnight’ we have a whole new cast of characters.* Hutchinson develops the theme at the heart of ‘Autumn’, taking … Continue reading →
