The hut is about 80m above the glacier. A steep stony/rocky path with fixed steel cables (new in 2002) starts just off the main Fiescherfirn in a broad re-entrant just to the north of the hut.
The Finsteraarhorn hut is pleasant and roomy with two common rooms. The guardians are friendly and helpful. There's an excellent west-facing terrace with tables and benches where you can soak up the sun from around mid-day onwards and watch your clothes drying on the railings. The view is of the Grünhorn range, the Grünhornlücke col and the group of summits collectively known as the Walliser Fiescherhörner.
The toilets are at the end of terrace, and (luxury!) there is a wooden trough for washing fed by piped glacier meltwater. Sleeping accommodation (115 bed spaces) in several small dormitories for about 12.

No mobile phone signal, but you can use the hut phone. The charge is the cost of the call (cheap in Switzerland, even to call abroad) plus a fixed cost of SFr 5. Good value.
