Saas Grund tips

How to get there, where to stay, where to eat & drink, tourist information

How to get there

By train to Visp, then postbus from Visp to Saas Grund. Some trains run direct from Geneva Airport/Geneva to Visp - otherwise you need to change, probably at Lausanne. The bus from Visp is the Saas Fee bus - Saas Grund is the village before Saas Fee.

Sometimes the bus runs an express service to Saas Fee. This stops in Saas Grund, but only in the village centre. There will be a local stop-everywhere service shortly after if you want to get off somewhere else.

The bus station in Visp is a few minutes walk from the rail station - follow the signs.

Where to stay

I can't recommend a hotel - I've only stayed in two different apartments.

If you want to camp, there are several sites. There is usually a colony of British climbers at Camping Mischabel, which is about 1km from the village centre on the road to Saas Almagell. On foot, the quickest way to this campsite is to cross the bridge at the bottom of the road to Saas Fee, then turn left and walk up the riverside path. Camping Mischabel is the second campsite you come to. It's about 10 minutes from the village, and has all the usual facilities.

If you are heavily laden, you can take the Saas Almagell/Mattmark bus from the village centre - it connects with the incoming buses from Visp - and go a couple of stops to the entrance to the camp site.

Where to eat & drink

Hotel Roby

There are plenty of drinking and eating places, all serving fairly similar food. In my view, by far the best place to hang out is the Hotel Roby, a small hotel on the east side of the main street about 150 metres north of the village square. Its street-level terrace gets the best of the afternoon sun, and you're in a good position for people-watching. The staff are friendly, and try hard to understand whatever language you try to communicate in.

It has a good selection of food available throughout the day and evening. If the small downstairs restaurant gets crowded - it can only really cope with the hotel residents, at least until later in the evening - they will serve you in the bar, or open the much larger dining room upstairs.
